Moving To/From Hawaii

If you are planning to move your pets to Hawaii it is important to plan ahead. The islands of Hawaii are currently rabies-free. To prevent introduction of the virus to the islands there are strict requirements for incoming animals. If you and your veterinarian review the regulations and all the requirements are fulfilled prior to your pets' arrival it is possible to avoid quarantine and obtain a direct release of your pet at the airport. Deficiencies in any of the requirements will result in a 120-day quarantine period.

If you are currently a resident of Hawaii and you and your pets are planning a permanent move to the mainland you must obtain a health certificate for all pets within 10 days of your departure date. The state of destination may also have vaccine requirements. Both the health certificate and vaccine requirements can be taken care of at the clinic.

If you are currently a resident of Hawaii and wish to travel back and forth to the mainland with your pets the rules for direct release also apply. All of the requirements for incoming animals must be met to obtain direct airport release upon return to Hawaii. It is best to schedule an appointment well in advance of your departure from the state to be sure you have all of the required vaccinations and bloodwork necessary to avoid potential quarantine. The requirements should be completed PRIOR to leaving the state.

All information regarding animals moving to Hawaii (including a list of participating direct release veterinarians on the islands) can be obtained at the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture web site.
